EMPLOYEE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS

    Hello All,

This is my first time trying to post something since our old CUES listserv went away.  I hope this reaches some of you and, Lisa, please help me out if I haven't done it correctly.

I am looking to see if any credit unions have a written employee development plan that has been working well.  While we do provide and offer lots of periodic training, I am more interested in creating a written plan that employees can choose to follow in the event they wish to grow but we have no current job openings.  Being a $130 million credit union with 45 employees we don't regularly have job postings.  I want to be able to acknowledge and reward employees for growing and learning in any position while they wait for another opportunity that may come their way.  I also think this will be useful in seeing who are the self-driven employees and how passionate are they about our credit union.

Any ideas or current programs you have to share would be most appreciated.  Thank you so much!

    Liza

    Good Morning Liza,

We have development plans for our different job titles.  Within most jobs we have levels.  For example MSR I through IV.  As they complete their learning plan they are promoted to the next level and are given a salary increase.  This helps alleviate the feeling of stagnation.  Please reply to me privately if you would like more information.  We are $168 million.  GCU has many more employees than you do due to our high touch model as a CDFI credit union.

    Have a wonderful day,

Take a look at Catalytic Coaching, it has the collaborative developmental plan and separates that from compensation conversation.

    Good luck!

CUES used to sell a development/succession planning process (it was an online program) with exhibits and a process I found VERY useful at my last CU.  I don't have access to it anymore but if CUES could point you to a replacement, it might be worth a look.

What a great memory you have, Chris! That 2007 whitepaper was called "Succession Planning Essentials." I'm attaching a copy from the archive. It looks like it has some evergreen items (see appendix) that would still be quite useful today, although I caution everyone that it won't reflect new thinking in the field of succession planning. (DDJ Myers is CUES' partner for succession planning.)

    Thanks for your memberships!
