Having Fun in Challenging Times - COVID Mental Relief!

This is the time to find ways to have more fun with your teams!  Morale is suffering, people are anxious - our people need something to lift them up.  I have an idea for those of you wanting to try something new… Last year we introduced a tool that has had a terrific effect on our culture.  It got people talking that had never met – it sparked tons of team discussion beyond anything I could have imagined. While we installed the full tool - they actually have a "lite version" that is a cloud-based system, and is not a big lift to install.  A perfect fit for a time like this.

Credit union teams can use this system to run a few fun contests and help lighten the atmosphere during all this crisis.  It's a "fantasy" league points system – basically, an organization figured out how to replicate the "fantasy football" experience but apply it to the office – it's actually genius.  In practice, it's been mind-blowing to see such a simple concept, when applied correctly, transform our business. Here's an amazing thing; you can build into the system any activity you desire, and so in "normal times" you would assign points to product referrals, but in these times you can assign points to anything - for example recognizing people, making the best paper airplane, anything!

We have received countless thank you's from our team for the activities we conducted using the system - the impact internally and externally is priceless. And the timing is also great. Let me know if you want to hear more about it. Stay safe, and be careful!

Interesting concept Eric.  Are the staff in teams by department or cross functional teams?  How have you seen that type of system change behavior?

    Hi All,

Wow - great response! I'd love to share more about how it works. A few people have reached out directly, and I will respond to you directly as well.

Russell - to answer your question - yes, a definite positive change to culture.  Employees really appreciate the fun, and the recognition that comes with it.  A key piece of feedback we received in an employee survey we did last year was that people wanted to hear from their managers - this has also had the effect of engaging managers with their teams more often as well.  In "normal times" most of the points are for product or service referrals, but during this crisis it's all fun, member experience, or employee engagement stuff.

How it works: Every staff member is given a logon ID, they then have access to the overall site, this includes leader boards, chat room, etc. (think fantasy football).  The site is tailored to our credit union.  Then you as the system owner, can set up people as teams, or you can have people compete as individuals.  Contests can run in parallel, or sequentially, and can be one day or three weeks - any time frame.  Then you decide what kind of contest you want to run - depending on what you decide to assign points to, some administrative tracking is sometimes needed.  Not much though, I have one person handle the planning and all the tracking as her "side job".

Here's an example of what we are putting together now:
    1. Easter Egg Hunt: This is for those staff not able to work remote. This will occur twice (once for Team A and once for Team B - we have our staff split into two teams to limit cross-exposure in case of an outbreak). Eggs will be hidden at all branches with a 2 egg limit per employee. Eggs will be filled with chocolate, an inspirational quote and a mini certificate for Connection Points (ranging from 5-100).  In addition to individual prizes and points, which ever team finds the most eggs will also win a prize.  Individual points can be converted to Amazon gift cards.
    2. Trivia: We're hoping to get trivia up and running next week. A trivia question will be posted daily in a chat room through the system, we call it "Cornerstone Connection". All employees will submit their answers through the chat room. Those with correct answers will be entered in a drawing for the daily prize. Prizes will include quarantine necessities from a bottle of wine to toilet paper to puzzles to snacks.
Really the options are limitless, and the system tracks the results, keeps a leader board, allows for "smack-talk" between teams, etc.  Also, as I mentioned above, you have the option to award points that can be converted into Amazon gift cards as well.

Is ok to share contact info for companies through this?  If so, happy to post it, or reach out to me and I will connect you.

That's great, Eric. Great to see how it works and what you are doing with it, but you've had several people ask for the name of the software that you are using. Can you please give us the name of the software, if not here can you email it to those interested? Thanks

Hi All, I received a lot of requests for the information and responded to some individually. Not holding back, I just wasn't sure about rules for posting the details.  I checked with the company and they are fine with it.  Assuming it doesn't break any message board rules, here it is:

    The company is www.performanceDelta.com
The product I am referencing is their Performance Fantasy League, website: https://www.performancedelta.com/home/solutions/#section-block-offset-6
Their Owner/President is Chris Burgess and his email is chris.burgess@performancedelta.com

I have been working with them for almost two years and can attest to their integrity and performance.  Chris is a real quality person.

If anyone wants to talk to me about my experience via phone or zoom, I'm fine with that too - always love to help advance the credit union movement!

Thank you for sharing!  We have been holding special employee events such as "The Great Dad Joke Challenge" where we have two employees tell their best dad jokes and the winner goes on to the next week to challenge another player.  With 230 employees deployed and working from home and another 81 in the branches, this has been a great way to get employees to log in and stay connected for a quick 10 minute afternoon break.  We record these for viewing later as well.  We moved our summer walking challenge to start now to encourage employees to form their walking teams and challenge each other to get out and move.  We also have employees that have stepped up after the joke contest and have special times of the day they are logging on to Teams and playing musical instruments and singing to encourage others (these are recorded as well).  Another employee holds a live cooking show for employees a few times each week to show employees working at home how to make a healthy lunch using ingredients in the house and reduce grocery shopping trips.  We hold an open mic session two times a week where employees can use the Slido app on their phones to ask anonymous questions to our CEO and executive teams.  Our questions have decreased from the panic of losing their jobs to offering supporting ideas to help others.  On Fridays, our CEO has a recorded quick chat with a member of the HR team to ask more personal questions so employees can see how she is handling all this on a personal note.  We are also holding our annual Peep Show contest virtually.  The difference this year is that we told employees that they are not to go shopping for the Peeps but need to utilize items from around their house to substitute such as eggs, rocks and one employee used their kids Barbie dolls and got the kids involved in making their diorama.  We have lots more stuff in the works as we know we still have another 4 weeks of keeping the social distancing and keeping employees working at home.

Ma'am, do you have a set time that the Associate logs in to do the Dad joke challenge?  Just wondering how exactly it works.  Also when they are doing the live cooking show what platform are they using?  Thank you for sharing.

I have been doing some small videos and posting to our enterprise teams page to help break the tension a bit:
I did this one last week, to remind employees we miss them and that as senior leaders, we too feel the same way.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfE5q0okEuA

I did this one today, it is a parody of (I'd assume, soon to be coming attorney's ads):
